Dr Abhay Raghukant Vasavada

Late Decentration of IOLs — An Enigma

Dr Abhay Vasavada, a surgeon, research scientist, author and mentor, has become an important voice in establishing Phacoemulsification technique as a standard approach for Cataract treatment in the entire world.

He has been in practice for more than 40 years and he completed his Masters in Ophthalmology in 1975. He was awarded the coveted degree of a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, England (F.R.C.S.) in 1980 followed by higher surgical training.

He is the Founder Director of Raghudeep Eye Hospital (REH) and Iladevi Cataract & IOL Research Center (ICIRC), Ahmedabad, India.

He has developed several techniques and has made important contributions to the understanding and practice of adult and paediatric cataract surgery.

He is a distinguished member of various International Ophthalmic societies across the world. He has been honoured with most prestigious awards including the Binkhorst Gold Medal in 2011 by ASCRS, India’s Best Researcher Award and Dr B.C. Roy Award.

He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Pécs, Hungary. He was elected as President of the APACRS from 2020 – 2022. He has been a keynote speaker and has performed live surgical demonstrations across the globe.

He has more than 250 peer reviewed publications, several chapters and scientific magazine articles. He has trained more than 150 National and 50 International Ophthalmologists.
